Just for today
Take a deep breath and talk to God

"Sometimes when we pray, a remarkable thing happens: We find the means, ways, and energies to perform tasks far beyond our capacities."

Basic Text p. 44
Coping successfully with life's minor annoyances and frustrations is sometimes the most difficult skill we have to learn in recovery. We are faced with small inconveniences daily. From untangling the knots in our children's shoelaces to standing in line at the market, our days are filled with minor difficulties that we must somehow deal with.

If we're not careful, we may find ourselves dealing with these difficulties by bullying our way through each problem or grinding our teeth while giving ourselves a stern lecture about how we should handle them. These are extreme examples of poor coping skills, but even if we're not this bad there's probably room for improvement.

Each time life presents us with another little setback to our daily plans, we can simply take a deep breath and talk to the God of our understanding. Knowing we can draw patience, tolerance, or whatever we need from that Power, we find ourselves coping better and smiling more often.

Just for today: I will take a deep breath and talk to my God whenever I feel frustrated.

Twenty-Four Hours A Day

A.A. Thought For The Day

What makes A.A. work? The first thing is to have a revulsion against myself and my way of living. Then I must admit I was helpless, that alcohol had me licked and I couldn't do anything about it. The next thing is to honestly want to quit the old life. Then I must surrender my life to a Higher Power, put my drinking problem in His hands and leave it there. After these things are done, I should attend meetings regularly for fellowship and sharing. I should also try to help other alcoholics. Am I doing these things?

Meditation For The Day

You are so made that you can only carry the weight of twenty-four hours, no more. If you weigh yourself down with the years behind and the days ahead, your back breaks. God has promised to help with the burdens of the day only. If you are foolish enough to gather again that burden of the past and carry it, then indeed you cannot expect God to help you bear it. So forget that which lies behind you and breathe in the blessing of each new day.

Prayer For The Day

I pray that I may realize that, for good or bad, past days have ended. I pray that I may face each new day, the coming twenty-four hours, with hope and courage.

Walk In Dry Places

The Delusion of "Just one more"
Other Excesses

A binge is a chain reaction that starts with one drink. After a grim period of enforced abstinence, that first drink may have brought us intense emotional release and a peak feeling of euphoria. For the rest of the binge, there was a continuing delusion that the next drink would help us recapture that peak experience.

Delusion leads us to other excesses. Some alcoholics also binge on smoking, food, sex, and power and recognition. In this frantic seeking, our basic delusion is that substances and things can satisfy what is really a spiritual need. Instead of realizing that there is a law of diminishing returns in the enjoyment of such things, we cling to the delusion that "just one more" will bring the relief and satisfaction we want. Delusions brought disillusionment, and only the truth set us free from alcohol. Other excesses might not hurt us to the extent alcohol did, but the excesses of our drinking years carry lessons that are equally applicable to other human problems.

I will carry out the day's activities knowing that I already have enough of everything I need for this day alone.

Keep It Simple

..our lives had become unmanageable. Second half of Step One.

The First Step tells us a lot about our addiction. We were out of control. Our addiction was in control. Addiction managed everything. It managed our relationships. It managed how we behaved with our families. As Step One says, "...our lives had become unmanageable." But we pretended we managed our lives. What a lie! Addiction ran our lives--not us. We weren't honest with ourselves. Our program heals us through self-honesty. We feel better just speaking the truth. We are becoming good people with spiritual values. Our spiritual journey has begun.

Prayer: Higher Power, I give YOU my life to manage. When I'm faced with a choice, I'll ask myself, "What would my Higher Power choose for me?"

Action: Today, I'll be honest with a friend about how unmanageable my life had become.

Each Day a New Beginning

I believe that true identify is found . . . in creative activity springing from within. It is found, paradoxically, when one loses oneself. Woman can best re-find herself by losing herself in some kind of creative activity of her own. --Anne Morrow Lindbergh

Creative activity might mean bird watching, tennis, quilting, cooking, painting, writing. Creative activity immerses us fully in the here and now, and at the same time it frees us. We become one with the activity and are nourished by it. We grow as the activity grows. We learn who we are in the very process of not thinking about who we are.

Spirituality and creativity are akin. There is an exhilaration rooted deep within us that is a lifeline to God. Creative activity releases the exhilaration, and the energy goes through us and out to others. We find ourselves and our higher power through the loss of our self-conscious selves while creating--a picture, a sentence, a special meal.

Creativity is a given. It is another dimension of the spiritual presence guiding us all. I'll get out of its way today.

Father Leo's Daily Meditation

MARTYRS

"A thing is not necessarily true because a man dies for it."
-- Oscar Wilde

I came to the conclusion in my battle with alcoholism that my involvement with God's will for me was crucial; my choice is the result of God's bestowed gift of freedom. And freedom is awfully real! The price of freedom is Auschwitz; the price of freedom is the world's starving millions; the price of freedom is the dead drunk in a derelict building. Men do insane and destructive things, usually because they think they know best. Men die to protect their ego. The sin of Adam, wanting to be like God, haunts us all.

Today I am learning to detach spiritually in order to discover a pure and selfless love. I stand back and consider before I act; often after a time of reflection I see the event differently --- and it is okay to change my mind.

Lord, I understand choice to be the key to my humanity.

See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland." Isaiah 43:19

"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path." Psalm 119:105

"By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness." Luke 1:78-79

Daily Inspiration

Peace is one of our greatest needs because it provides for the strength we need in times of turmoil. Lord, I turn to You because You are my source of peace.

Laughter is a great way to reduce stress and prevent taking ourselves too seriously. Lord, bless me with a healthy sense of humor.

This is not just a blog for me but a lifeline to sobriety, serenity and recovery. This is a mini AA meeting for me. I would appreciate your respecting the purpose of this app as indicated by it's name and logo.

      Keep coming back!

    7. Anonomus - I did not mean in any way to disparage the story. I liked it and the message. I just think we should leave the posting of readings to Mat and that the comments should be used for discussion and well comments. There has been a huge amount of cut and paste here with people trying to control/tell the discourse. Your post was not of that nature and I apologize for any offence created.
I really appreciated the wisdom of the story.

    1. In the Big Book, it does say that the only requirement is a desire to stop drinking but in order to have that desire you have to actually have a drink. A fellow alcoholic shares that all the time in meetings for those who come so they can identify and decide if they are one. Because the book also say no one can pronounce another they must decide for themselves. But our singleness of purpose is that you must have a problem with alcohol to attend meetings. I would hope people would respect that alcoholics use this blog for recovery also.

  9. FIRST, THE FOUNDATION
Is sobriety all that we can expect of a spiritual awakening? No, sobriety is only a bare beginning.
As Bill Sees It , p.8
" practicing the a A.A. program is like building a house. First I had to pour a big, thick concrete slab on which to a wrecked the house; that to me, was the equivalent of stopping drinking. but its pretty uncomfortable living on a concrete slab, unprotected and exposed to the heat, cold, wind and rain. so I built a room on the slab by starting to practice the program. the first room was rickety because I wasn't used to the work. but as time passed, as I practiced the program, I learned to build better rooms. the more I practiced, and the more I built, the more comfortable, and happy, was the home I now have to live in.

  10. From the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous:
If, whIn you honestly want to, you find you cannot quit entirely, or if when drinking, you have little control over the amount you take, you are probably alcoholic
This passage helped me when i first came to AA. i offer it up to anyone who might be new to this.

  13. Give me a healthy sense of humour! I like that! Today I enjoy laughing, with others and myself, not at them. I have found acceptance and humor in my past alcoholic behavior and thinking. At some I am appalled at. We do not forget the past, it has become my greatest asset. And Thank God for our many freedoms, including freedom of speech! Free from the control of alcohol. Good reminder of how alcohol was my God, controlled every aspect of my life. Sober in Yuba City, CA!

  14. It is necessary for me to take my own inventory on a moment to moment basis because taking yours does not in any way benefit my sobriety. I wish you peace and serenity from Sacramento!

  17. Good morning family hope all is well with you all! Grateful to god and aa for waking up another day sober, love readings, when I read walk in dry places it reminded me of when I tried so hard to manage my drinking, expecting different results , the delusionment of my reality, how if anybody dared call me a alcoholic I would jump on their throats and declare that I was not! Ego, false sense of pride big time denial! How I always tried to capture that feeling of a good buzz when I first started drinking, but would always drink myself to oblivion! Grateful today because of the fellowship and my hp I no longer have the desire to drink, but have the disease, reading bb. Listening to others share, that we who are alcoholics have this physical allergy, and prior to program had no mental defense for taking the first drink! Since accepting and surrendering to step one i say without hesitation, here and at meetings im jose and i am a alcoholicThank you all who share on this app. &thanks once again matt for your service, thanks winston for the post, I know nothing but grateful to god and aa

  18. Thanks for all the heartfelt comments. Peoples personal insights are always so helpful I'm feeling with my own issues. I am not a textbook alcoholic or addict but I have had plenty of experiences with both. The AA program can add a lot to any persons spiritual journey and growth and I am glad I have continued my exposure to it and the people who work it.
Take what you need, give what you can, always continue to listen and learn.

I am nothing without God. AA shows me how to live.
      P.S. id like an invite.

  23. I can only suggest that anyone who is convinced they are a real alcoholic, get with another real alcoholic who has recovered as a result of AA's 12 steps, and allow them to guide you through them. That is the essence of sponsorship. As a result of the spiritual awakening that occurred in me through working the 12 steps of AA with the guidance of a capable sponsor, I am able to give back to the real alcoholic and/or addict who still suffers. By sponsoring and guiding men willing to surrender and do the work, I am giving back to AA and the rest of the world! what I was so freely given....love, patience, kindness and tolerance. Also, by speaking and sharing my experience, strength, and hope at meetings, I offer hope to those deemed "hopeless". I once deemed myself "hopeless, worthless, too far gone", but have since been redeemed!

  88. Look up bluidkiti or bluikiti. Not sure which one.
She publishes a website/forum that has all of the readjngs on it. Perhaps you can sign up there...i did a few years ago until i found that Mat was taking her site and republishes for free...i felt a little guilty cause i knew he waa taking her stuff, and maybe should have just paid her $10 yearly fee or whatever it was.
Google her name and hopefully you will find her site.
Mat actually republishes the readings from her paid website. When he started to do it a few years back I remember that she was OK with it, even tho it was sort of ripping her off for the work she did to put all this readings from so many sources into an online format.
Maybe she has asked him to stop doing that. Or maybe she has stopped. Or been forced to sop.
OR maybe Mat is just on a break for the holiday. I dunno.
Anyway, most of the readings can be found online on various websites. Yes, it might be a pain to do all that, but if this valuable site is gone, we might have to work a little to get the readings...how much trouble would we go thru for a drink or a drug??
Best of luck everyone. Keep it simple.
    Tony

  104. Mat, I hope you are OK. Thank you for being an intrical part of my sobriety. One month after getting sober a fellow aa member told me about your app. It has helped me get through the death of my brother, death of my grandsponsor, times when I couldn't get to meetings due to illness and traveling, etc..
I am very grateful of the time and talent it took to set it up and keep it running. Thank you.

  116. bluidkiti.com does have the same readings. You do sign up for the site but donate if you want. It is a safe fallback for those of us feeling shaky when we miss our morning meditation. God bless and enjoy 24 hours of sobriety.

  127. Posting email addresses on the assumption that this has become an invite only site may result in email spam from unsavory users...just sayin. I think its just over. Bummer
